Heart of Dallas Bowl to Honor First Responders

Game announces new initiative to honor First Responders

DALLAS, Texas – The Heart of Dallas Bowl announced a new mission in time for the fifth annual contest: to honor first responders through football. The bowl game owned and operated by ESPN Events, a subsidiary of ESPN, announced the new initiative at the 14th annual Freedom Run 5K outside Dallas City Hall. The bowl game will be played on Friday, Dec. 26, featuring a team from Conference USA against a member of the Big Ten Conference.

“First responders are men and women who are the true heart of Dallas and put their lives on the line every day to help make our communities safer,” said Brant Ringler, Executive Director of the Heart of Dallas Bowl.  “They are some of the hardest working and under recognized people in our communities, and we are proud to host them for a day of tribute and great football.”

The groups that will be honored at the game will include firefighters, police and EMS personnel; with tributes scheduled during each quarter, and presentations throughout the event. The pre-game fan fest will also bring together first responder groups from all over North Texas, with a tailgate outside Cotton Bowl Stadium, showcasing hardware from participating units.

Both Dallas Chief of Police David Brown and Dallas Fire and Rescue Chief Louie Bright III were on hand for the announcement.

“We are proud to support the Heart of Dallas Bowl in their new mission to honor first responders,” Chief Bright III said. “I want to encourage all fire and rescue personnel, as well as all other first responders who can attend, to come be celebrated.”

“The Heart of Dallas Bowl continues to host an event the entire community can enjoy and we are extremely appreciative,” said Chief Brown. “The first responder initiative is a powerful ‘Thank You’ to men and women who deserve to be appreciated.”

Complimentary tickets will be made available to first responders and their families via signup at the bowls website, www.HeartOfDallasBowl.com, later this fall. These tickets are made possible by generous underwriting from North Texas businesses and bowl corporate partners.

Businesses who are interested in getting involved supporting the first responder ticket program can contact the bowl office at (214) 389-4300, or at the bowls website, www.heartofdallasbowl.com.

The 2014 Heart of Dallas Bowl will be on ESPN (1 p.m.ET) for the first time ever after being played on ESPNU for the past four years.

The bowl will occur during the 85th year of games being played at Cotton Bowl Stadium on the grounds of Fair Park, which features 227 acres of museums, attractions, history, art and performances located in the “heart” of the ninth largest city in the United States.
