Zaxby's Heart of Dallas Bowl Game Notes

  • The seventh edition of the Zaxby’s Heart of Dallas Bowl will be played Tuesday, Dec. 27 at Cotton Bowl Stadium. Kickoff is set for 11 a.m. CT (noon ET) and the contest will be televised by ESPN.
  • North Texas (5-7, 3-5 C-USA) is headed to a bowl game for the ninth time ever. The Mean Green will become the first school ever to participate in the Zaxby’s Heart of Dallas Bowl twice. North Texas defeated UNLV, 36-14, in the game following the 2013 season.

  • Army owns a 7-5 record after upsetting No. 24 Navy, its first win over the Midshipmen since 2001. The Black Knights are headed to a bowl game for the sixth time ever. The team’s last trip came in 2010, when it played in the Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl in Fort Worth, Texas.
  • With Army’s win over Navy, it marked just the third time in the last 54 seasons (‘96, ‘00) that the three service academies all posted winning records in the same season (Air Force 9-3, Arizona Bowl; Navy 9-4, Armed Forces Bowl).
  • Jeff Monken is in his third season at Army, and has helped the team to its most wins since the squad picked up seven victories in 2010. The Black Knights won their first three games of the year, including a win at American Athletic Conference champion Temple. Jeff Monken is a cousin of Todd Monken, the offensive coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and last year’s head coach of Zaxby’s HODB participant Southern Miss. A dozen of Monken’s family members, including his father, Mike, and brother, Tom, have coached football at the high school, college or pro level.
  • The two teams faced off earlier this year, with North Texas picking up a 35-18 victory at West Point.
